The Thing
Walking through the wood at midnight might seem strange to you and me,
But there’s a soul who does so every night with certain glee.
Its grin, which goes from ear to ear, is inhumanly wide.
The robes it wears of purest black are made from human hide.
It’s looking for the lost and scared, and those who cannot rest.
It hears a man’s fast-beating heart from deep within his chest.
It longs to taste their life, and finds amusement in their shrieks.
It cares not whatsoever for the havoc that it wreaks.
Not long ago, a couple who had moved from out of state
Were walking through the woods, although they knew that it was late.
The man had stopped to check his watch, and then his lovely bride
Had disappeared completely from her loving husband’s side.
The man had spun around to see just where his wife had gone.
He knew he had to find her before they could carry on.
He heard a noise behind him, and he turned in time to see
The body of his darling wife impaled upon a tree.
He screamed and ran towards her, but before he could do more,
A figure loomed behind the tree, its face awash in gore.
It reached out with its massive claws, and grabbed the poor man’s head,
And twisted it until his eyes were looking back instead.
You seem a little frightened. May I ask why this is so?
Surely, you don’t believe my tale of misery and woe?
You’d better get on home now. Just be careful where you trod.
The Thing just might be lurking where you cannot call to God.
