For Curiosity's Sake
The soft red glow illuminates my hands
Somewhat colder as I inspect them
Nothing is different but I still look
An audible click and the light fades
The shape of my hands disappears in the dark
A momentary flash in the distance
A jolt to my subconcious as I search for its origin
Subtle sounds draw all eyes in the dark
Never seeing yet still aware of what lies beyond our vision
We wait in perfect silence, Nothing comes
Disinterested, I look up just as the sky lights up
Far away the stars wink into and out of existance
A blanket that envelops us as we huddle in the night
Hiding us from the outside world, from the sight of others
We mumble in the dark, a procession of the blind
Groping and reaching for the light, slaves to impulse
In an instant, the light disappears leaving only a blooming rose
Racking coughs break the silence, soon joined by another
In this way, we create a covenant of sorts
Our chant the violent hacking sound of expelled smoke and life
The world narrowed to the clockwise motion of time
Wind whipped and cold, These feelings affect me distantly
Far away I feel cold but here I am fine
Here I stand and observe my hands in the flickering light
They are still hands, stretched taut by youth and wrinkled by wear
Our ritual ends and no one speaks except those still chanting
I wonder why I don't feel different, looking to disprove everything
Disappointment wells up inside of me, my faith swayed
They spoke of things seen and heard, of fantastic realities
Yet here I stand, Hands out, Normal hands that neither glow nor talk
Foolish, One word that describes my actions
My desire for the unknown can only be described as foolish
Once more I hear the jingle of key as the car door opens
The red glow returns, perhaps less red now as I look
My hands find their way to my pockets as I tuck away my thoughts
As my world brightens the sky darkens, vanishing points of light far away
Twinkling to themselves in the dark, fading into the night
Somewhat colder as I inspect them
Nothing is different but I still look
An audible click and the light fades
The shape of my hands disappears in the dark
A momentary flash in the distance
