Hmm.  Well, I once met a young man who didn't know what a quarter of something meant.  Shall we say that's his fault, or someone else's, or both, or shall we say he just needed different language, as he did know what "a fourth" of something meant?  And I am a somewhat literate person.  But due to certain circumstances, I got my first real job in many years a little over a year ago, working in a warehouse.  And I work my hardest at that job.  It's a physical job, and I am now stronger, physically, than I ever was.  And everyone says I'm the hardest worker there.  And I know what "infrequent" means.  Maybe mine is a rare case.  Oh, well.

Well, it can be said that one who knows multiple ways to say things, at multiple levels, has everything, in all levels of brusqueness and delicacy, to draw on, and thus, has all those levels in his spirit.  But one who only knows what a fourth of something means, and not what a quarter of something means, also has those levels.  They may lie dormant in some people.  But you have to reach, whispering, into their spirits, not laugh at them with a hammer, to bring it out.

But you are a teacher.  And you employ the laughing hammer here.  Maybe there is a way to reach students with a laughing hammer rather than a spirit that whispers into the soul.  And many subjects might be best taught with a hammer.  But you are a teacher of poetry.  But you are only a fixture in your students' outer worlds.  Or can you really whisper into their hearts?  Mm.  If you can't whisper, which most can't, including me, though I was able to live by my whisper for many years, so maybe I can -- maybe you need the hammer.

And I have never been proud of living by my whisper.  Maybe that was the trick.  One has to have no trace of pride in one's operation.  One must be humble, and ask nothing but rice and beans and coffee or tea of the universe, and an occasional bit of wine is all right.

You can feel the pull of the shadow, I know it.  But you are bravely fighting every day.  I have begun to feel again that the life is not worth this fight.  How have you continued fighting so long?  Ah, I know well enough how now.  You Mithraic warrior, you.  We fight back so much pain.

And we have been silent for long years.  We were younger in those years.
