4th of July really means?
We come to that day when independence is recognized
a day when a Continental Congress identified thirteen colonies as distinct from Great Britain
No need to denigrate the men
some of whom held slaves
for there was that promise
of that freedom which is never free
Oh that day when on the fifty anniversary
of the Declaration of Independence
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson
took their last breaths
A lawyer from New England whose son
used his legal acumen to advance the cause of freedom for those
on the Amistad
While Jefferson to his dying day was locked to the economic benefits of slavery
most of his slaves still in chains
capitalism in full effect
“Upload, the master race idea, genetically disposed to rule the world”
The disparities between ethnicities reflected in the opinion samples of
black and white folk about the value
of sending people to outer space
Schools segregated by where people live
the lack of access to health care
access to business capital
and yes even to this day racism
in sports leadership
“Still at the back of line when it comes to being ahead”
Fighting to fulfill that promise
one step forward two steps back
dying younger, and incarcerated more
highest unemployment of any group
Now the ground that was thought
to show the smallest gap is now
being widened by naked partisan
games to purge voters
Calling call to those grounded
by a vision of fifty states with tied
not only by a Bill of Rights but
by a Declaration of Universal Rights
Happy 4th of July y’all
may we someday have a union
that goes beyond name only
“Take nothing less than the supreme best
do not obey rumors people play
‘cause you can pass the test”
