Seed in the Sky

 
Buried deep in the soft dust  
of a crater on the Sea of Tranquility
three obelisks stand proud as pyramids 
pointing silently at three stars  
beyond Orion's belt

The tall explorers who built them  
have long since left our galaxy
but since then
governments have spent
millions of dollars
removing similar evidence
from our own planet 

When these ancient architects
first set foot on Earth
we were beasts
free from conscience
and steeped in savagery
but by the time they left
we had already started
to become what we now call
human 

So why did the ancients
leave us so suddenly in the lurch
Were we just a failed experiment
that went wrong?

The answers
are still there
waiting to be found
high above our heads
