Catlike Reflexes

a half hour ago i heard a cat-like wail
it echoed through the house 3 times
before going silent
at the first wail, i thought, a cat outside?
however, on the second and third
it was far too clear
too unmuffled
to come from the outside
it seemed to possess a strong doppler effect
as the wail would come stronger and then leave
as if it were flying through the house
i checked the basement
empty
there were thuds and bumps from outside
i couldn't see anything from my window
there's no way for anything to get in and out---everything is closed
the wail was only catlike
it sounded a little too close to human for my comfort
any idea as to what it might have been?
im gonna blame it on the cats, seeing how the neighborhood has like 5 cats that walk around free
but the wail was coming from inside the house i am almost sure....
