Against The Waning

Long are the lineages
and even longer are their tales,
a lifetime to hear all their lives
yet ageless are their deeds and valour.

Yet, for all their splendour,
all are cast under a shadow
with all lines ever waning
one step further towards a final defeat,
though the good of a few
are welcomed pauses
on the downward fall;
beacons of hope and light
as like the stars of old
showing that not all trees forever rot;
their fruit and seeds still flourish.

Overall Tolkien's works seem to have an air of melancholy and faded glory: and all the more touching because of this.
