NEW RULES FOR BOOMERS
("Never trust anyone over thirty." Attributed to Jack Weinburg, political activist)
never trust anyone under sixty
lest you fall victim
to their bewilderment
and desperation
never be offended
when they call you
"young man"
or stoop to lift
the heavy boxes
but accept the kindness
of gods and strangers
with gratitude
and bless them
as though the years
have made you wise
be amazed at the buoyancy
you've earned
by simply living this long
and cherish the gift
of invisibility
the unscrupulous
would consider it
a superpower
remember the good ol' days
with fondness
but don't forget
the wiles of retrospection
so study the beauty
of that deep endless blue
and sweet warm dark
they will beckon
before you know it
with that in mind
stop buying shit
but rather thin the pile
it's an act of kindness
never trust anyone under sixty
lest you fall victim
to their bewilderment
and desperation
never be offended
when they call you
"young man"
or stoop to lift
the heavy boxes
but accept the kindness
of gods and strangers
with gratitude
and bless them
as though the years
have made you wise
be amazed at the buoyancy
you've earned
by simply living this long
and cherish the gift
of invisibility
the unscrupulous
would consider it
a superpower
remember the good ol' days
with fondness
but don't forget
the wiles of retrospection
so study the beauty
of that deep endless blue
and sweet warm dark
they will beckon
before you know it
with that in mind
stop buying shit
but rather thin the pile
it's an act of kindness
