After the Rain

Leaves jeweled in raindrops
sparkle in the afternoon sun
Thunder rolls in the distance,
the storm’s dying gasp

Steam rises from parched city streets
Summer heat returns –
a roiling, shimmering blast as
remaining clouds boil away to white-blue sky

A twittering robin peeks over her nest
and nervously looks around
Finding it safe now, she launches,
swimming through thick, sultry air

I stand like a statue with eyes closed,
drinking in the summer warmth
It caresses my skin like a lover
as I drift away on a passing breeze.
