Numbers

The counting numbers are infinite,
Start with one and never complete,
Progressing in consistent intervals,
This property we call: discrete.

The primes are a subset,
Not every counting number qualifies,
And although gaps appear quite often,
The set is still infinite in size.

The negative numbers show direction,
Left down the number-line, not right,
But negative numbers are not wrong,
Else two wrongs could make a right.

The imaginary numbers are quite strange,
Based on the square root of minus one,
Yet we need that: which does not exist,
To know how electric circuits run.

Transcendental numbers are well named,
Their majesty we can confirm,
We prove they cannot be expressed by,
A polynomial with finite terms.

The real numbers are very strange,
They can be irrational or discrete,
Although counting numbers are endless,
The reals are a much larger infinity.

These concepts although quite abstract,
Allow for technology that really works,
The philosophical question is:
Do numbers define our universe?
