Candle

To the peaceful calm serenity,
Of a blissfully quiet night,
I am laying relaxed content,
Reading by candlelight,

Our marriage has a rhythm,
Where passion ebbs and flows,
And our desire is measured by:
A single candle glow,

To reciprocate desire,
Should our partner choose,
No spoken word required,
Simply light a candle too.

Tonight: excitement buzzing,
As wife and friends adjourn,
Depart for hen’s gaudy night,
I wait for her return.

I grow drowsy as the hours pass,
Reading becomes a chore,
My lonely candle: dark, burnt out,
Book fallen on the floor.

I fancy I half awoke,
Caught half-way from a dream,
Heard women giggling, whispering,
As though hatching some new scheme.

I descend back into slumber,
That nebulous realm of fey,
Floating ocean of nothingness,
While reality drifts away.

I wake to commotion,
The air heavy with perfume,
Five candles stand there proudly,
Ablaze in our bedroom.
