The Empty Chair ( for Amy & all who have lost someone )

Christmas is an empty chair
donning a dining table
during holiday—

Condolences haunt
as words, until meaning
fumbles between our lips

We flail at half-loss
as razor blades, slicing
inadequacy apart

Yet, offer them regardless
to salvage the wreckage
of our helplessness

Praying our brave dearth
proves comfort enough

Author's Note
Amy was my first cousin on my mother's side ( Mississippi ) whom we lost this week to covid. She was only 50 years old and leaves behind a 14 year-old son, and family who promised her we would go on, and celebrate with Love. Happy Christmas, People's of DU - be thankful if you have not lost anyone this year; many of us have.
