Old Friend Go

Never have I had
Many friends to call my own
And fewer stayed long

It has left its scars
Like names engraved in the trunks
Of trees far too young

But each is a coin
And like a dragon I horde
My only treasure

I struggled to tell
Which of those are mine to keep
Not just another's

And struggle to know
When to keep fighting for them
And when to let go
