classic-life recital

A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day
of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful
which God has implanted in the human soul.
—Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

i.
i the conductor
of my classic life
raise now my baton
o’er earth’s joy and strife
my full orchestra
blessed family!
yields every extra
for my symphony

ii.
swelled with the prelude
strokes each bow each string
whose graceful motifs
hallelujah sing
babe on the nipple
drinking life from breasts
learns how to tipple
‘tward its own conquests

iii.
frowns in the evening
2nd-subject groove
senza cadenza
gives me naught to prove
all my crescendos
brass-wind-magnified
flame through the windows
of time’s countryside

iv.
threads counterpointed
weave tight tapestries
whose resolutions
melt in majesties
flutes and percussions
tremble in the wake
of all the passions
of orchestral ache

v.
i the conductor
of my classic life
lay down my baton
at the cadence rife
life has its amens
when its course is run
for all its stamens
bow at set of sun
