Prayer to the Unknowing
May I write poetry on your body
with my tongue
each word worship to the wordless
each move motion-filled homage to the motionless
each breath the divine last supper
may I devour all of you fully
(even as I sense there was
never anything to eat).
May we write songs with our love
each caress a hymn
of sweet verse poured out to the divine
each guttural sound percussion
in the dance of the eternal present
singing out in unison
may the infinite arrive in waves
as we come and come again
(even as we sense there was
never anything to come).
May we write sleep at last
succumb to slumber’s lull
bodies spent, hearts full
interlacing body parts and souls
dream state fading to black
may we merge knowingly with the unknown
beyond hope, word and song
(even as we sense there was
never anything to know).
