Photographs
They send photographs…
She used to say in old days
…For those near the end
So you can remember them
And then she sent hers to me

End of life or end of relationship? Not sure. Still, they send you their pics they want to hold on somehow. Not a clear message (to me).

Could be either or. I usually like to leave it open to interpretation, but it is based on a true story about my grandmother and her best friend.

Oh my heart. This is deep, Wally. It truly made me pause.
Good luck in the comp.

Thanks Eerie. This one too is based on a true story (see the Premonition piece I posted as well). My grandma's best friend sent us pictures (when her and my grandma were young), like saying "remember us this way".

Sheesh, Wally! You're on an emotional roll with these! I can't think of anything to suggest here.

It's the Premonition part 2 poem, which go hand in hand. My grandma's best friend sent us pictures months before her passing, that's when my grandma said it. (or rather repeated what she and her friend used to talk about in the old days).
My maternal grandfather sent pictures to my mom and uncle and then he passed away some time later (they had an estranged relationship with him). So when my grandma says things like that, I take notice.

Would you believe I took the last picture of my great aunt before she died, it was of her with her last birthday cake. That was haunting. I sent it to relatives too, she died a few weeks later.

I think in the digital age, everyone can take pictures at any given minute, therefore it kind of loses some of that nostalgic sentiment. Taking a photograph of our loved ones and capturing special moments really is an art, because we know past generations never had that luxury.
Sorry to hear about your loss, but it feels like that birthday was even more special, a sort of gift to you to cherish that moment.
Hope all is well.
