The Fear

Nervously he approaches
Hope, anticipation, fear and dread
Flooding his senses, rendering him mute
She smiles, unaware of his base desire

He’s the joker, the funny guy
His laugh is bigger than life
His awful jokes, her playful groans
She loves his awful banter

But he’s all bluff and bluster
His mouth of sand, his words desert him
The fear rises to his throat
Threatening his suffocation

Another lost chance, despair unfolding
The fear of humiliation overwhelming
Confused by his sudden silence
She frowns, unaware of his base desire
