That Fateful Day

That fateful day
I should have bought it
From the market stall
The perfect black beret

It was the right size
It was a perfect fit
Black & french & lush
Part of my perfect regret

Starring me & you
And the stall lady too
Who nearly sold it then
And there to me for you

It would have been so
Awfully pretentious
Just perfect you might say
Me for you on that day

I should have bought it
My perfect woolen wig
At the markets in that
Sunny glory starring you

The price seemed right
But somehow out of reach
Like the fancy restaurant
And my fumbling at the beach

Maybe someone was there
To teach me, to teach us
About tunes & perfect scores
Of mole-hills & puss

I should have bought it
That damned fateful beret
And not handed it back
And maybe helped you stay

For a few seconds longer
For a minute for a day
With all your sunshine glory
And words I couldn't say

I'm glad I never bought it
That damn puss-filled beret
So fucking pretentious
Kind of cliched & gay

I'm glad I said no to it
Even though it was made for me
Just not on that perfect day
On that perfect fateful day
