COLOR LINES

it stuck in her craw,
that shit --
them actin'
as though white skin
was a ticket
to some
fancy banquet
where the livin'
was easy
and the money
flowed
and nobody
struggled
or was singled out
or shot
or arrested
and, shit,
she'd never owned
a slave,
never lynched
a soul,
didn't owe
nobody nothin'
and maybe if
they weren't so arrogant,
so goddamned demanding
'cause wasn't any
tearing up
or tearing down
going to change
anybody's
mind
Author's Note
None of us need to be reminded that all lives matter, but that black lives matter. Not more, but just as much. Maybe the slogan ought to be "Black Lives Matter Just As Much."
I was thinking of the lines of a play. I am imagining somebody else's thoughts, revealing, I guess, my own political prejudices.
