URCHINS ON A TRAIN

“Come! Come on!” “Come!”
“Run faster!”
One after the other
They race past me
Giggling, elated, winded…

“Come on!” They call after their gasping mates.

One grasp the ladder
The other follows the foot of the other
“Hop on!”
“Come on!” Self-proclaimed leader implores.

Haha!

Like tiny packages
They load themselves neatly on top of the carriage
And,as if amazed by their mastery
For a moment they pause
Look down from the rusty roof
Then break out laughing, clapping, howling…
(Like a poorly choreographed choir).

Haha!

For a moment there,I choke with delight;
The beauty of their unbound spirits takes my breath away
And
I cannot help but give myself to the jolly band.

So I let my hair down
Close my eyes
Lose myself to the whistling locomotive
The breezing wind
And
Their endless chatter!
