No Road (Home)

'How we live measures
 our own nature'
         -Phillip Larkin

We look upon what ails us;
there are no roads between the
bricked cottages lining the shore,
the sun shines on them as
grass fills the pathways
where no one walks
and all endures as same.

To will nothing that time can't change
hastens its detriment.
We can go back in our minds to
simpler days when we, as young
helped old, but now we hurry along,
frenetic, placated ever in busy trying;
our clumsy selves in avoidance of
what we can never avoid
even when no roads exist to reach it.

The final prize, if it exists, is one
we can't win by seizure alone
but by simply ignoring its pertinence.
