Bright, hot Santa Cruz beach afternoon
shiver as ocean with bare skin collides
GASP! my stones will be icecubes soon
a quick breaststroke finds best waves to ride
Approach the swell, drop over the crest
in freestyle glide across crystalline face
knowing when to stop, that's the real test
the wave will never ever cede the race

This is tight work. The nuances of meaning move in the substrate of the tangible action. The sense of immediacy versus that of eternity, the overwhelming presence of nature, the serenity found in meeting and gliding upon such titanic forces. My best friend was a surfer and used to tell me about the Zen quality of it.
