for my lips are beautiful

tribute to the virtuous woman

nor have i been ever wont to wear lipstick
for my lips are beautiful all by themselves
fine young men line up to catch me in the quick
but my pucker shoots their yearnings from the shelves

manicures have cured no hands of feeble touch
but my fingers lyrics know of healing songs
ne’er have i been one to shovel up too much
rather would i heal the wounds and right the wrongs

of the wayward footsteps of the pedicured
feet that oft upon diminished souls encroach
where i tread flow rivers to whose banks are lured
all my journeying.  nor shall i face reproach

for the parfum that i wear springs from the rose
elegantly dancing where the bees have sipped
in my countenance, i bear no vain repose
for compassion has with zeal my eyes equipped

words of flattery my heart disdains to hatch
for my natural tongue has virtue of its own
lend your ears and sweetly of my poems catch
for my lips are beautiful with love full-blown
