Ode to my Work Freezer

iron walls, icy, gray
guarded by a heavy door
shielded by coats
the freezer is a room
where i will hide
a safe place for my thoughts
to crawl outside
the freezer has seen monsters
wander in
it’s listened to the voices of angel workers
and the ones who sin
they come and go
but that frozen cave remains
my constant hole of arctic
to wipe my tears away
the freezer has seen the joy
of my laughter and glee
it’s also seen my eyes
red, swollen, and runny
and then the streams of hurt
begin to set in
burning against my cheeks
in the frosty air
dethawing my feelings
for a moment
until they’re numbed by four walls
and i lock it in
sometimes i feel alone, bullied and misunderstood
but that freezer never fails me
even if no words are used
it listens, and that’s good
so when the day gets rough
or i need somewhere to chill
that freezer will unlock
and let my heart come in
it will
