CHOICES
“What do you want for food my love,” she said as we arrived
from tramping around all the shops, I don’t know how I survived
“Do you want some boiled potato’s with fish and parsley sauce”
“That will do just fine” I said “I could eat a horse”
“Or would you rather chips“ she said, “with some ham and eggs”
I ended the unpacking and took the weight off both my legs
“The potato, fish and parsley sauce will suit me just fine,
we’ve been out shopping, got home late, it’s past our dinner time”
“Or would you like faggots and peas with nice fresh bread and butter”
She’s beginning to irritate now I thought, and answered in a mutter
“I told you that the potato, fish and parsley sauce would do,
but I really don’t mind which, I’ll leave it up to you”
“Well we bought these chops in town, so I could do you a dinner”.
“And while you’re deciding what to cook, I’m sitting here getting thinner”
“Your temper’s getting short“ she said, “And worse as you grow older”
And after chops I thought, you’ll serve up tongue and then cold shoulder
“What are you having anyway I’ll just have the same as you”
“A ham sandwich and some crisps” She said, “But that won’t do for you”
I said “I’ll pop up to the fish- shop, get us some fish and chips”
“That’s a good idea” she said as it barely left my lips
Choices, why all the choices I thought as the fish-shop came into view
Like all the shoes she tried on in town and she tried on quite a few
We went in every shoe shop, until I could have cursed
especially when we ended up in the one we went in first
“Shall we have had a meal in town“ I’d said, thinking it would please her
instead we rushed straight home to empty the boot into the freezer
And after fetching all this food home and storing it away
we end up eating fish and chips out of a plastic tray
But it saved you cooking didn’t it love, all those choices you gave me
are all in our fridge and freezer, to survive through world war three.
