Somewhere Below the Poverty Line

Alleyways dart and intersect the city like throbbing veins pulsating with poison
Racial tensions in the city are as high as the humidity tonight
She leads me up the block and into her place
I am assaulted with the stench of cat piss and ashtrays
Depraved porn playing on a muted TV
I watch her struggle to find a vein as her pimp takes a blast from his stem outside the bathroom door
He hears the bottle of pills rattling in my pocket like the animalistic thoughts rattling in my head
He’s thinking robbery
Up until I came inside her you did not cross my mind
But walking back to my building I can’t stop thinking about you
How I wish you were here
How I wish you were her
But the space you rent in my head
Is dilapidated
Condemned
