A Work In Progress

Yesterday I looked at the sky to find something worth living for
I tried searching my own plane and found more pain
But underground this familiar terrain suffocates the roots of all I try to cultivate
The place where the waves break on shore intimidates and I drown when the weight holds me down under the surface
So I search the sky for hope
And see stars to wish upon
But its the day that strains my will so I wonder if the sun works the same way
Or if only stars far enough away not to illuminate the face of a broken child have the strength to share their light
Sometimes I feel that way
Broken down by the weight another carries
And the second-hand pain deteriorates the healing light I try so hard to carry within myself
So the day feels dark, the night illuminates
And I am left feeling like the opposite of everyone

Author's Note
This is an unfinished piece from a couple years ago. I'm looking for suggestions. Background: I was feeling worn down by the struggles of other people whom I tried to support amidst my own challenges in mental health. I felt heavy and drained with no energy for myself, but found that energy in helping others, which in turn ultimately emptied me again.
