barcarole

a boatman survives the river’s undercurrents

There are always a lot of people so afraid of rocking the boat that they stop rowing.
We can never get ahead that way.
-- Harry S. Truman

your calm exterior
seems far superior
to all the raging storms that bruise my breast
yet in your silent depths
the lurking hands of death
strangles all life that sinks beneath your crest

tyrant of wordlessness
unspoken wantonness
your innuendos haunt the page i write
with pros of prosody
your ire of irony
cons all my songs that flower in the night

i ride upon your tide
despite the wrath you hide
that subtly seeks to gulp my frail canoe
i am a man of faith
who quakes not at this wraith
my vigilance shall foil your deadly coup
