Achluophobia (Fear of the Dark)
Sighing we know the night has arrived
The looming darkness coming upon us as wolves
Devouring the light as though a lowly caribou in it's jaws.
Slick with the oil of our nightmares
It encloses us withing a shroud of deceit and trickery
Our own eyes akin to finding what we cannot see
Blind to what may hide inside the black.
Groping fingers move in the atmosphere of night
Almost palpable to the touch it is
Though once knocking against a hard surface flinches
Not yet understanding that it is only an object.
"Where's the light?"
A simple phrase so profound in it's meaning
Though stating many other statements and questions such as
"Is there something there?"
"I can't see."
"There's something else in here."
Bringing forth the panic of the subconscious mind
It fools us into seeing shadows, shapes
Many illusions though some we could swear are not.
Frightening beasts and people nonexistent
They swirl into our 'vision' like specters in the night.
Breaking into a cold sweat we hide from the darkness
Cowering underneath a blanket that only holds the essence
Though feeling comforted by not 'seeing' the horrors outside.
We cannot see ourselves in the dead air
Though we can imagine it
However we only see the dark swallowing us
Wide orifice of massive horror it is
Devouring and eating everything out of sight
Never knowing when....
When it finds you next.
