rio grande raftsmen

deep
r  i  v  e  r
flow, my friend
i  can   h e a r   y o u r
r i p p l i n g     m  e  l  o  d  y
o’er  t h e  steep  p o r t l a n d i c
falls.  the raftsmen bare their chests
to  the  n a k e d   noonday  sunshine
bamboo trains their sacred lifeline
knowing not a moment’s rest
till their rafts grow static
in  night’s  r e v e r i e
yet  their  candour
n e v e r  ends
in  h e r
sleep

a  l  l
their wives
a n d  children
w a i t   impatient
for   t h e   daily  bread
that  they  m i l k  traversing
hard  the  nipples  of  their  trade
rustic tunes their  t h r o a t s  enticing
s c a r c e  a   m o m e n t   for rejoicing
for  t h e i r  memories  never  f a d e
of deep wounds they’re nursing
many  dreams  l a y  d e a d
o r    i m p o t e n t
but  ‘tis   then
new vibes
c a l l

The Rio Grande River flows through Portland, Jamaica, passing along the Rio Grande Valley to empty itself into the bay at Port Antonio. Lively sun-painted raftsmen ply their fun-ride tours trade along the inviting waters, entertaining tourists as well as fellow citizens.
