But Why?
But why do people go to war?
Is what my Joey said to me.
It was a question perfect for
When I was walking by the sea.
I was alone to contemplate
But why do people go to war?.
My son inside to patient wait
Five years ago when he was born.
His dad had fallen on the shore,
The cry of gulls as battle raged.
But why do people go to war?
There was no marker for a grave.
I knelt to pray and told my son
Just what his dad had said before
He left “to fight for everyone”.
But why do people go to war?

Dear JP,
Oh what a stab in the heart this is so touching! Beautiful sweet write, and the innocence of a child’s question. Absolutely love this. Excellent write! H🌷

Beautiful and heart tugging. A child usually asks but why trying to understand the evil that exists in the world.
Good luck in the comp Ms. Jade.

A thoughtful, somewhat painful work...written so well, it makes some of us jealous. Thank you for seeing more than i dimension.

Re: Re. But Why?
Thank you for coming in to read & express, but what about this ink do you consider the painful part? I ask because there is more going on here than the reader might perceive. With the Quatern, there’s no room for meandering off with too many thoughts for too long. For that reason I appreciate the discipline of the form.
So that’s why I ask. That, and the part about how my writing “makes some of us jealous”. I’ve had members from here talk to me of how they’ve learned & grown by watching & reading me, not to mention talking with me. Of everything I’ve experienced since my first leap of faith as a poet, the thing I’m most honored & amazed by is when someone tells me how they’ve grown with me as a mentor... when I hadn’t been aware of it. Never ceases to humble me, and I’m grateful to those who have.
‘Please excuse the ramble.

The "Painful" part is in-between the lines....that the title question and premise exist at all. Your deft handling of the scenario in the poem shows that you understand all the implications. The jealousy? Just a theory that most of us wish we wrote/ thought and deduced with your intelligence, depth and forethought.
