In This Place
In this place I am one.
I know this fair strand.
For countless times have I walked it.
And numberless are the sands.
Familiar to me as the salt air breezes,
Known and unknown,
We are one.
Each made for the other…
Two limestone stacks stand offshore
Some say there stand two brothers; others, there two sisters bathe.
To my mind come the words of a simple phrase:
We are one together, yet separate and single.
I have watched them all my days
In the sun, the wind, and the rain.
Surely, married in all these things as are we
Two together, who can never be.
Another friend is gone…where do they go?
Steve, Paul, Brother B.
Where are those closer than my brothers?
I’ve not found any to replace them.
Titans once walked the earth where now are found only the children of lesser gods.
God, I miss those days…
Those who could find the softer side of my life – Rah, Denise and you.
Why does the sweet, sweet music end?
I miss my friends.
Friends and temptations…the listening ears.
The worst things for my sanity and best things for my soul…
Did we buy the wine so long ago that the last one standing should toast lost friends?
Who lied and said, “Last man standing wins.”
Who wants to be the last man in a world he doesn’t know,
A silent sentinal over a life that is past?
Where are all my friends?
I can see now the path has led me into a setting sun
It’s funny how missing you comes in waves receding further and further from the shore…
And more and more in this place I am one –
Alone
But the longing is good, it means the feeling was real.
I had so many things I wanted to say.
What could I say?
What can I say?
I miss my friend.
