Phone Calls in the Night

phone rings again at three am
on it in a split second
Instinctively, I know its him.

"Baby, your Mom..."
Oh God not yet! I need her!
I'm not ready to face the cold world without my Momma!

"I'm sorry Baby but your Momma has fallen again and I can't get her up. She's hysterical and just wants you."

I'm on my way Daddy.
denim shorts and a dress shirt, the first thing I could grab
slip on shoes and fly out the door

foot to the floor, making my V8 scream
just thinking of my Momma, on the floor in need

I walk in she looks up and smiles
"Hey baby, you look pretty.
Where are the girls?"
Come on Momma, did you hit your head?
Whatcha doing in the floor?
Wouldn't you be more comfortable in the bed?

120 pounds, feels like a ton
she's like a floppy ragdoll
no help but adorable
threatening heartbreak overload

tuck her in, all eight blankets
tucked and pulled just so
Ok Daddy,  your turn
out of your wheelchair and into the bed

He climbs from one prison into another.
All set? Give me a kiss, I have to go.
"Thank you Baby, what would we do without you?"

"What would you do without ME?!"

What will I do without you?"
