In the Night
She’s restless in the dark,
Her mind is racing across time,
Her heart is relating a story,
But her soul is lost in thought.
He’s wanderlust in late hours,
And takes to walking the lonely streets,
The air is cold along the boulevard,
Without a sense of direction.
She peers out her bedroom window,
Her face pressed up against the pane,
Knowing he is somewhere out there,
Waiting for the day to meet him.
His steps echo in the sidewalks,
A shadow under the street lamps,
His breath becoming now visible,
Thinking she is warm in her bed.
Her heart races picturing him,
Taking her in his arms one night,
As she watches the city lights,
Believing he’s somewhere out there.
He pauses briefly looking up,
There’s a figure in a window,
But then he continues walking,
Thinking she’s asleep and dreaming.
The longing and the aching can stir emotions,
When all is silent and there’s no one else in sight,
When strangers and dreamers will be future lovers,
The minutes pass slowly yearning in the night.
