Our Silent Wars
If only you knew,
Knew how hopelessly lost I am in the void that is my mind.
Knew how tired I am of this chase to perfection that is my life.
Because I’m here suffocating and drowning,
Smothered and strangled under all my sombre sorrows,
Trapped between my dreaded daemons and desired dreams.
But I’m trying, I promise – fighting my mental struggles,
Staying afloat my endless responsibilities,
hopelessly pursuing my aspirations.
But you do know,
Know how bloody our battles can get.
Know the tortures of our day to day.
Because I know you too are battling and wrestling,
Contesting and confronting your own dragons,
Swallowed up and lost in your own routine.
But it’s unwinnable, we know all too well –
How are we each expected to slay our beast?
Told to hold our tsunami at bay,
Each left to fight ourselves, by ourselves.
We repeat our days, plastering a smile on our faces,
Manipulated and impassive, dancing like puppets on a string.
We run for our dreams, trying to escape our minds,
Innocent and hopeless, chasing our tails.
We suffer our existences, enduring aching brains,
Clueless and wide-eyed, frozen in the spotlights.
Why can we just not be happy -
Free from the leeches on our back?
Why are we plagued with dissatisfaction -
Handicapped by our own shadows?
Because we’re all here brushing past each other’s ghosts,
Skipping over the thoughts that could save a life.
When all it could take is a little conversation or a little recognition,
To help us fight our wars,
To help bring us home.
