in sweet accord
a song cycle—part 1
-1-
when did your eyes
become sharp flames,
your gentle tongue
a vicious sword?
there’s no disguise
of such acclaim
as rights the wrongs
we ill afford.
-2-
when did your smiles
become a frown
and all your songs
turn bitter wine?
is it not vile
to wear a crown
whose every prong’s
a battle line?
-3-
why does your sun
no longer shine
to wake the dreams
we once held dear?
what have i done
to undermine
your high esteem,
for so severe
-4-
a turnabout?
where is the love
once marvelous
once full of light
once so devout?
no boxing glove
has genius
to put things right.
-5-
give me your eyes:
i’ll quench their flames
and bend your tongue’s
two-edged sword.
from dark disguise
your love i claim:
let’s right our wrongs
in sweet accord.
