A gradual narrowing loves incandescent light in the mist off a morning pier in long island harbor

You warmed my callused hand
a bible verse that moved me once as a child
feeble and weak I sprawled around your satin fingers

as believing goes

inexperienced I curled
a wilted and rewashed cloth Band-Aid
snug come loose

truth sped hard crashing through an armed roadblock

fresh laid blacktop over my heart
grinding
sweeping away the busted
cracked pieces

brittled
riddled with holes
brushing away the cigarette butts and mangled bottles
busying the milky nipple off my lips to mouth

what remains
but an empty bottle?
