Deity and Theism
I never could see
the point
in worshipping a deity
so insecure that it wanted to be…
worshipped in the first place…
and 'im with such a self-indulgent slew of bad habits of 'is own…
like jealousy… anger and taking revenge…
All traits that in us... aren't allowed…
You might think that, "Our Father" could set a better example for all us children to follow…
it's worth so much more than cheap words…
Then there are all the other gods out there...shall we delve into their pecadillos too?
And while we're at it…
what's with all this "temptation" bullshit…
It's like teasing animals in the zoo…
"Go on Billy...poke 'em with yer stick… don't you want to see what they'll do?"

No-one but a psycho would sign up to be a follower of the Old Testament God - which your poem makes clear.

Your comment reminds me of how I always liked the red words of Jesus. It's been a while since I looked at them, but my recollection is there's not much to find fault with, irregardless of one's religious beliefs.

In modern New Testament Bibles, the words that are attributed to Jesus are often in red.

I remember those 'red line' bibles from my time as a christian - and I find now the deeper truths of these words in the Gospel of Thomas, which I hold close to my chest (as it were) as a guide.
The Old Testament God, however, always struck me as partisan, vicious, petty, jealous etc despite the 10 commandments making basic sense - our current world would still be improved by following them.
I'm still flumoxed by Jesus claiming he came (as in the New Testament) to 'complete' the Old Testament. They seem to me to be of a different order, and therefore discontinuous.

Ah... I see...now it makes sense...
Back when I was in Jr high...I read the Bible 'most all the way through...front to back... haven't referenced it much since then...but I tend to agree with what you said.
I've nothing against his philosophy... reminds me of Mahatma Ghandi...who also believed in turning a cheek...Thanks for the comment and also the visit...Ely

I cannot understand why people think that prayers might be answered. If one assumes that there is a god, then he must have an overriding plan. Can one imagine going to a workman, who is helping to build some Great Architects's creation, and saying to him: "please don't put that red brick in there, please put a yellow brick there to please me". How do you think the Great Architect would respond to such a trivial prayer? Bollocks!

I feel a football player who asks God to help his team will is terribly arrogant. Doesn't the other team deserve equal consideration?
And really... aren't there are more important things to pray for?? Ely

I reckon if you take the phrase "made in his image" literally, it makes sense. Bunch of vengeful, flawed folk running around...and the old testament wrathful god would be that image, I guess. What's the phrase? Oh yeah " do as I say, not as I do..." I like the way you wrote your thoughts here

Thank you, MizWillow...good point you have there...they were a difficult lot to deal with... didn't place much value on the lives of any but themselves...sorta like many a plantation owner in the South...during the
un-Civil War...
Seems like everybody kept slaves at one time or another...
How can otherwise intelligent people be so damned immature? hugs...Ely

They do say that one should, "always leave 'em laughing"
and a lesson might be better taught this way...
Come to think of it...ever heard of Stanley Holloway?
I consider myself an agnostic egalitarian...
let every Creed have its day...
Leave every being decide for themselves what they want to believe...as long as there is no proselitizing...ever unless people are coming to you...hugs, Ely
