Right Now
What am I left with?
A semaphore signal I don’t understand
some counter-force operating underhand
and a rocky faith
which keeps trying to tell me
“all is well”.
How can people be so damn sure?
I draw an open blank
and say “maybe … maybe not” ...
Clinging to my cup of coffee
I take a deep breath
and think “right now, this is what I’ve got”.

Re. Right Now
Excellent, Josh. This demonstrates the wavering faith of humans coupled with realization of the moment.

Thank you - I love your succinct summary. It brings to me an "aha" moment, clarifying what I was wrestling with and grasping towards. It's one of the gifts of being on DUP. And honoured by the RL too.

Right now is all we've ever got, isn't it? I love that ending!

Thank you Willow; glad you like it. Since I'm a born worrier about everything, I need to keep reminding myself that 'right now' all is o.k - and o.k is what I've got right now. Dentist again tomorrow morning but right now DUP :))

Thank you HF; glad it connected - and honoured by the RL. I've just about given up on the booze too - at my age it's kind of a health insurance policy :))

I agree, and feel much better for your comment. I am not yet t-total - but close. Perhaps that's the best way to keep it :))

Thank you MysticalRose for your comment. It's kind of a simple lesson, cultivating acceptance of our ignorance, but one that takes a lot of learning. We so easily flip back :))

Hmm. This profound in the sense of evaluating certain points in our lives. You've captured the depth here and I keep going back and applying it to my situations.
Thanks Josh.
Thanks Josh.

Thank you Wally; glad it finds apractical 'application'. Of course valuing the present moment is hardly a new theme in the history of humankind but it seems we have to re-articulate old truths many times over in many ways before it begins to sink in to our psyches. I think that's, partly at least, the role of poetry in wider society.

A profound poem Josh...reminded me of the Daoist story by Lieh Tzu about the farmer and his son.

Thank you Harry. Is that the story about the farmer's son who was injured and therefore saved from being conscripted as a soldier?

Definitely, a turning point in maturation. It’s funny how we all arrive at that moment; each with different underlying reasons that leave us gripping that coffee.

Thank you starzzz for the RL and comment. You got it that we all bring our own 'histories' to gripping that coffee. Glad it was relatable.

I'll be the one that says your moderate use of rhyme gives this the proper punch in all the right places, especially punctuating the ending with emphasis.

Re. Right Now
We can control our actions, and sometimes our thoughts,
but that's as far as we can reach with any accuracy.
I've always been a optimist, even in my worries,
for to be otherwise......well, I've always been an optimist.
Loved the underlaying depth of this write.

Thank you A_T. Glad you liked the write. I agree we can make certain moves that seem the right thing to do at the time, but looking back I often see they were based on false assumptions - meaning that though I'm a bit of a pessimist I am often surprised to be proven wrong yet again :))
