The Day You Gave Up On Me

footprints on swollen ground, echoing every hurried step.
how quickly population becomes a void,
ghosts of laughter reverberate in a mind tortured within regret,
the skin still tingles from a long departed touch.
a life that never was still struggles to be
while the atrocity that claimed it still smiles from its shade,
notes play in a distant dream, one bleeding into the next,
destiny trapped in its chosen state finds no escape
from the memories from which the song was made,
no turning back yet neither no chance of turning away,
and it all orbits back to eclipse the present,
lack shadows  have, dreams of want, and forgets need
knocking opens no doors, asking is to be promised no answer
and you’ve twisted my name
cut out my face,
replaced it with a blank slate to draw everything you wish i had been
i’ll add up and minus this out and
divide
find some fraction
place the zeros over every aspiration
and live
keep breathing
gasp when i must
make myself a violent show, a canvas for scars
and always circle the carrion of a dead fantasy
remembering without stammer
the day you gave up on me.
