To Water

To Water

The Plymouth Hoe 6pm LT 9°c 750m, Calm.

Half-scallop,
half-fragile,
tenacious sea - I sing to you,
I will your danger to lap over me - I cherish you,
unburdened and fresh.
Mist leaps over us, upon gallant horses the colour of heady plumes.
My other worshipper leaves me here, in the thick, one with you
and we share moments long since passed, head submerged, mind blank, land-world gone.
I thank you in my quietness.
I thank you in my endurance, in each stride, in clarity of mind.
You: Goddess of ferocity, God of peace,
You: My birthing to this planet,
You: Mother and Father to me, my family and treasure.
Where shall we go next? What adventures
and challenges will you gift me?
What newborn creature
will you fashion out of me,
beyond woman, beyond the Motherhood I almost shared
with you, beyond determined Ice warrior,
placid and free?
Sleep will meet me not. I am lost in you -
even when we part
these bones won't let go of your tenderness.
