Further
Merry Pranksters on the long highway
Their bus, named "Further," shining bright
Loudspeakers planted on the roof
With the sound of Hendrix and The Doors
Hell's Angels followed close behind
Their motorcycles an uproar
Crowds listened to their bikes rumble
With gravel spurting in their wake
Pranksters and Angels found our park
Poured "Electric Kool-Aid" in a bowl
The hippies drank and had their fill
A taste of LSD that turned them on
Pranksters danced until twilight
Then took "Further" on the road
They drifted from town to town
And lived by their own sweet code.

Author's Note
The Merry Pranksters were probably the original hippies in the mid '60s, and Hell's Angels the first really notorious biker gang. The gathering described here, known as a "Love In," was one of many on their travels.

Hippies are increasingly rare these days, but some of their influence remains, at least for me. The "Flower Children" grew wild back in the day. I was a little too young for them myself, to be a full practitioner in the movement. By the time I reached high school it was beginning to die down, but there was a remnant. Thank you Brenda!

The golden age of hippiedom. San Francisco was probably their city of choice, and my dad took me on a tour of where they hung out. Unforgettable. Thank you Tim1

So interesting. I do know the term "hippie" but this was also a little before my time. You are wonderful to share a little fascinating history with us. Thank you, lovely Thomas.🌞

I think I'm still a hippie at heart. My hair is short, and I don't wear beads, but the sentiment sticks with me. Try reading "The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test" if this subject interests you. You might start wearing flowers in your hair. Thank you SoulzGirl!
Re. Further
I was in the middle of the psychedelic gangbang
era living a short way from San Francisco in the
late sixties and early 70's...
I was at WinterLand at least once a week , saw shows
in Golden Gate Park , saw Kesey and his bad boys ,
saw shows with the Dead and Starship at Golden
Gate Park , and many others at Winter and and other
places in the Bay Area in the old days...
I was one of the golden boys of the hippie era...
I saw Zappa in 1970 at his old alma mater , my
High School in southern California , my high school
at the time...
Saw the Dead more times than I can remember , and
saw more rock bands in their heyday than most could
ever remember , like the Who the night a drummer was
called from the audience , due to the drummer being
given drugs by his girlfriend , mixed with alcohol due to
her being pissed off at him...
Saw Robin Trower , Journey and Golden Earring in one
Winterland show in 1974 , saw many other bands , and
was one on the outskirts of the inner Bill Graham inner
circle...
I could name enough bands I saw in the Bay Area to wear
most people out...lol !
Bummed I missed Hendrix , and Led Zeppelin...
Nice poem , Crowfly !
You missed the real years , though , when we did things
like take two hundred hits of pure LSD in one night !
A nice "Dead" ovation though !
