Vagabond
The vagabond outside the store
Requesting any ready cash
I give him what change I have
And his gratitude is unsurpassed
I then watch him drift away
His back pack heavy in the sun
But I marvel at his dignity
Even with an open hand
Some give him a buck or two
Others simply turn away
But he maintains a seeming pride
A confidence one hopes will stay.

dearest Thomas I believe like me
your heart is forever changed
in the ways of true sympathy for the homeless...
most would barely even notice the man
let alone his demeanor like me though
how can you help but notice now?
we know how hard it is to hold your head high
on the best days let alone
not knowing where you will lie your head...
beautiful write...
love Brenda ❤

Thank you for the comment Brenda, one that shows your sensitivity and insight. So many of the homeless carry themselves well despite the uncertainty, and danger, of their lives. They live on the streets, seek out shelters, and somehow hopefully survive. We have so many in our area, and most exhibit decency, not desperation. They can be admired for their courage and hope.

I like the way you focus on the person's reaction - their sense of pride as they walk away - and I feel the description of his "backpack heavy in the sun" alludes to his burdens but that he nonrtheless acts with dignity and respect, no matter how difficult his circumstances.

A fine analysis, Lozzamus. Many homeless survive to lead regular lives, me included. Not sure, though, about how much dignity I personally showed on the streets, that I witnessed in others. I tried.

I know, so sadly though, decent people who care are so hard to come by! Do you work with the homeless?

Powerful piece crowfly!
Lots of homeless where I live as well
Sad to see so many struggle but as you said to Brenda "They can be admired for their courage and hope." This is certainly true they keep going no matter what and do what they can without help from anyone besides other homeless ones a hard life they live no doubt
Evocative powerful piece!👏

You're right, Hunterapsych. It is their mutual reliance that really gives them strength. It can keep them warm, body and soul. Thank you!

It takes an open mind and heart. To some, the homeless might as well be invisible. A form of social blindness, really. Thank you!
