Two lovers adorned in wedding white
They’re bonded to each other for life
Swimming in synchronized perfection
The swan couplet is monogamy in motion
Ballerino and ballerina dance in harmony
Upon the cold northern Mississippi
Causing the geese to look homely
And the ducks to seem silly
That love is a natural force
As nature intended
Is embodied in these swans
Whose romance is evident

My entry for the 'Bone' competition.
The accompanying photo is of swans wintering in the open water of Minnesota's cold Mississippi. I just witnessed them swimming in the river, near where I live, this last Saturday. The temperature out is currently -6 Fahrenheit with a windchill of -14 F. Yet, the swan couples, as always, swim in complete synchronized motion.

Beautiful entry, man! A wonderful tribute to Mary Oliver! I'm loving the familiar imagery, and as a Mississippi resident, the scenery is all too familiar :)

I hope the swans have returned to your part of the river. For many years they were almost unheard of. A nature junkie I saw my first pair in 1991. So rare, the DNR had them both tagged. Now they're a common site.
I'm by no means a ballet fan, but I never appreciated Swan Lake till I observed swans. A nesting pair will swim in complete unision. So will there singlets. How they agree on a change of direction confounds even the experts. They truly are fascinating.
