Black
Waking up, seeing that I’m covered in Earth
A huge smile on her face when my mother gave birth
Certain things I noticed, as I’m listening around
That people call me black and not brown
Yet the feeling of black is so blameful
As though I should be most shameful
Black cats will give you bad luck
The Black Death was running amuck
A Black Hole won’t let you escape
Blackballing won’t let you debate
You don’t aim to be a black sheep
And Black Friday’s when everything’s cheap
Blackmail can be destroying
And blackheads are really annoying
My gums aren’t black – they’re brown and pink
It’s shit like this that makes me think
I’m not black, why should I be?
The word adds nothing to my identity
I’m brown for fuck sake, just look at me!
Or better yet, let's leave it as ebony
Place a coal on my chest, it won’t disappear
See the earth in my skin become crystal clear..
A huge smile on her face when my mother gave birth
Certain things I noticed, as I’m listening around
That people call me black and not brown
Yet the feeling of black is so blameful
As though I should be most shameful
Black cats will give you bad luck
