estrangement

that sad angle of your head
your eyes never meeting mine
you sitting there all bundled up  as if frozen stiff on this november evening despite my warm apartment
my questions to you i could be asking a statue
an impassive hulk turned to stone

ten or more minutes pass
you rise-- i move to embrace you
i feel your body water logged
feel like i'm working to pull you up from underwater
my belly meets yours of no acknowledgment as you straighten to leave  out of the door

all night in half- sleep i became a seismic  needle
bobbing here bobbing there
trying to land on  some
catchword  of such disturbing sensitivity it might
cause you to voice your hidden turmoil
might make you obey the human need to SPEAK
obey the human need to SPEAK
if only faintly
if only like the pen of a
blind man when it suddenly fits together
in heard synchronicity
