A creaky bed & the secrets of the universe

That Friday
we fucked on acid
you were eighteen & a half
building up to the climax
of your purple patch
still into Poe & your jeans were so
tight I had to fight them
like snakes
just to get over your ankles

We rolled & giggled
to a single stickybud heartbeat
on a nest of big blue cushies
all over the floor at  419
& the soldiers upstairs
kept banging on the ceiling
until we thought maybe
it was god complaining
& wondered if the devil
would bring a gun to bear
to spite love
now the war was over

We threw the snakes in the air
and you clapped
when they landed perfectly
on the big white chair
though every so often
they would catch my eye
zip whispering
like a sad firework
with a grumpy little hiss
until I bowed
& waved them goodbye

I was too busy otherwise
licking sherbet or something
you still felt shy about
chasing all your secrets of the universe
the things a creaky bed
never learns to hide
until the other side of mystery
poked up its head
& together we watched the trees
climb quietly back into place
coming down with the dawn

Even the cat looked surprised
by how much milk two people
can swallow
when their tongues
get stuck on a trip all night
