A Bondservant
There was a time when it was proper
And proper too a time to end
Long ago in sin and death
This broken soul had found his friend
Apart from all he called his own
He reaped the fruits he hadn't sown
Ease and luxury banded chains
And death's malevolence brought pains
Forged within the fires of depravity
Of the greatest gravity
There within the felon's box
He saw the judge in chains and locks
And higher still the whole commotion
Was purely for his deep devotion
His drugs and avarice and greed
Paid dividends he didn't need
Paid not a single penny's heed
There, amidst the darkest ride
He saw the changing of the tide
Death and hell, where is your sting?
Hades, where's your golden ring?
He is mine, he makes it clear
That grace has not abandoned here
And the sweetness of symphony reigns
Upon the hour where my pow'r
Sought this poor indentured soul
Freely gifted what you couldn't
What no man could give or hold
There he turned to me and called
There within those jaded halls
There within the cage of man
I gave to him a better plan
I am not, though here I am
Close to thee and near to Sam
I am like the sun to rave
And with that power I forgave
With righteous power overcame
And raised the dead from hell and shame
He triumphed by his word and deed
To fill what voids your fails succeed
The proper end to sins of men
Became us; yet again
I didn't see, I didn't know
That coldly as the Autumn snow
The leaves of iron on my chains
Were placed by my rejected Cains
Ensnaring all who came to life
And subjugated them to strife
Yet by the word, the word of Truth
A being close to me brought youth
And deeply sought invigoration
To everyone in every nation
And in that cell without my freedom
I found my cause and liberty
There was no other like that promise
That wiped the tears from you and me
The darkest hours where my justice
Far deprived my just reward
Upon that secret place, you know
I found Him who is now my Lord
And proper too a time to end
Long ago in sin and death
This broken soul had found his friend
Apart from all he called his own
