The Beach
You are so stupid and naive
Slipping love notes into the suitcase of a man who is leaving you
Leaving you for a vacation with a woman he claims to hate
But proclaiming love to you as he packs
He’s doing it for his kids
You repeat those words to yourself incessantly
Willing yourself into believing its true
As passionate images of the two of them together fill your mind
You lie awake listening to the sound of your breath catching
As you weep for your own self-respect
Dying a slow, painful death
At the hands of a man who you would give the world
You lie awake listening to your own agonizing thoughts
While he lies awake listening to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach
Probably with her lying by his side
Basking in the victory for which she always strives
You wait for him to come home to your loving arms
But he doesn’t return
Instead he rushes out to be with his true love
A bar overflowing with the golden brew that he can’t live without
You hate him just as much as you love him
You promise yourself that this will be the last time he makes you feel worthless
You vow to get on with your life without him
You lie, oh Lord how you lie
He’s sorry, oh he is always sorry
But sorry means nothing if you keep inflicting pain
But you let him so it’s your fault
Stop letting him think of you last
