Evensong on the radio

Anthem and chant across a Chinese rug
sleeping dog and sunshine at the window.
Gothic arches in the church, casting shadows in the room
curtains not yet drawn as chord and cadence mingle
pleading the Lord for peace according to His word,
that they may depart, their eyes having seen the glory.
Souls magnify the Lord as organ and surplice
combine a scene, drawn a thousand years or more
fading echoes from the past, understood by faith.
Each day and yet again revitalised in chant and song
beneath gothic arches, organ tones and childrens' voices
before the rerodos its painted history and heavy gilt.
Untarnished gold, eternal metal, hides a limewood saint
and abeyant angels and archangels: Lucifer not invited
standing, cold outside the oak and studded door
tempting comfort to all who'll listen.
